Abstract
Thyroid funcion was determined with 125I-triiodothyronine resin uptake (T3 value), serum total thyroxime (T4 value) and free thyroxine index (T7 value) in the sera of 86 pairs of the maternal and the cord blood of the fetus of gestational age ranging from 17 to 40 weeks 12 pairs intrauterine growth retared (IUGR) group, and 8 newborns 3days of age . The results. 1. T3, T4, T7 values in the fetus and the pregnant women were summarized as follows. (a) T3 values in the fetus were sighnificantly higher than in the pregnant women, decreasing progressively with gestational age. T3 values in the pregnant women were sighnificantly lower than those of the euthyroid non-pregnant women. (b) T4 values in the fetus were significantly lower than in the pregnant women increasing pregressively with the gestational age, T4 values in the pregnant women were higher than the euthyroid non-pregnant women. (c) T7 values in the fetus increased progressively with gestational age but remained in the euthyroid range. T7 values in the pregnant women were also in the normal range of the euthyroid adult. 2. No significant differences in T3, T4 and T7 values exist between the mother of the IUGR and the term newborns nor between their IUGR infants and the term newborns. 3. T3, T4 and T7 values in the newborns were significantly higher at 3 days of age than at birth.
